Branded

I don't know why but I felt compelled to blog this. I checked my e-mail this morning and found two items from Club Monaco (sniff, the only people who e-mail these days are my friends simply because I give them money). One note was about last minute gifts (I balk at your $20 fig candle a la box CM!) but it was the other one that gave me pause.

Club Monaco celebrates Boxing Day with a special gift with purchase. Shop at any Club Monaco store in Canada on December 26 and receive a bottle of SEI Water. This water is refreshing, chic and only available while supplies last.

The promo is, come to our over-hyped-we're-the-place-to-be Boxing Day sale, buy something that we are still over-charging you for, and we will give you an exclusive bottle of designer water for free.

Okay! December 26, Christmas is OVER, bye-bye themes of charity, good-will, giving to less fortunate, humbleness and thoughtfulness, let's thank our loyal customers by giving them a free bottle of H2O so that they can go back to feeling like the superior upper class stars they are. On the one hand I applaud the marketing department for finding a new way to stroke their targets (I really think it's on the mark), but on the other hand I'm going, if this is where I shop and what I identify with, yuck. Can I not be fashionable without being selfish?! I doubt it.

T'is the season for giving

For the past few weeks my office has been collecting food items for Christmas hampers. As the department rep, it was my job to organize this activity and store the food in my cube. (I just realized I should have taken a picture.) We requested to collect for an elderly non-guaranteed pensioner and a large family. Today was delivery day. I was looking forward to this day. The past few weeks have been busy and hairy at work so I wasn't feeling the Christmas spirit. I was hoping that finishing up this good deed would spark a little something inside. I had never delivered a hamper before so I didn't really know what to expect. I don't think it quite worked the way I wanted it to.

For some reason I was very enchanted by the idea of collecting a hamper for the "old lady". I made sure she got the two tins of shortbread cookies, the whole wheat saltines, the Earl Grey tea, and the Strawberry Jello as opposed to the Grape, which seemed more appropriate for the family with kids. On Monday night I had to go out and buy gifts for the children and the lady. I picked out a soft, dusty rose scarf and gloves set. I envisioned her wearing the gloves over her papery skin hands and the hat on her blue white hair as she shuffled down the street on cold Winnipeg winter mornings. I wrapped the gift in pretty paper, ribboned it, and put a label on it with her name and "from Santa" written on it.

This morning I phoned the lady to confirm the delivery. I thought I detected some excitement in her voice as she gave me the details of finding her apartment. I felt a warm spot in my heart already.

My co-workers Kat and Mike came with me to do the deliveries. Mike drove and acted as the obligatory male companion for a trip to the North End. Lady's apartment was in a Manitoba Housing block. We all load up our arms with boxes of food. One of the block's residents saw us and was happy to open doors and hold the elevator for us.

"Christmas Cheerboard?" he asked us.

"Yeah," one of us answered.

"That's great. I got mine yesterday," he said proudly. It was encouraging to see how happy the guy was. Lady lived across the hall from the guy. I think Mike knocked on the door.

Lady opened the door. She wasn't exactly elderly looking. If I had to guess I'd say mid to late 60s. The tiny apartment smelled of stale cigarette smoke. Lady waited as we put our boxes down. I got the feeling that this was routine for her. I started thinking about the scarf and gloves with a bit of disappointment. Lady did thank us as we headed out. Mike wished her a merry Christmas and all the best in the new year in his usual jolly manner.

Our next stop was the family of five's house near the north edge of the city. The mom met us at the back door. I guess to be honest I was expecting or hoping for some kind of bubbling over gratitude. Reflecting on the experience now I don't think the family was ungrateful, I think they were maybe a bit shy, embarrassed even. I can understand that. I think the reality TV shows like Dream Makeover get people thinking that if you make some grand generous gesture you'll get people crying and tripping over themselves to thank you. I guess that's part of why we engage in philanthropy. Although, to be clear, I don't think I do it to make myself feel like a good person, I do it because I like knowing that someone's life has been positively changed. When I don't get that impression I feel disappointed and sometimes discouraged. Am I being unfair here? Judgemental? I hope not. I can't say that I'm excited to do this next year though. I think I would rather try spending an evening at a soup kitchen or something.

I'm interested to hear about anyone else's experiences with philanthropy and what you get out of it. For the record I've had some awesome experiences too.

Bonus points for your creativity

After my blogging binge last week I've been quiet lately, I suppose. Busy. Details I can't disclose publicly. I'll discuss later. For now, I thought I would at least post the answers to my own quiz. Officially I think Rob had the best score. Amara--we'll see about February '09 (her guess for when I'll be married). Whatever happens two years and two months from now, you will be invited and yes, there will be free drinks. Wait, is Christian coming? (yay, fun Christian!)

1. Jill brought Truck home on this date: dd/mm/yy
Answer: 28/Jan/06 I <3 Truck :)

2. What is Jill's shoe size?
Answer: 8

3. How many pairs of shoes does Jill own (at last count in October that is)
Answer: 52 (I think I'm at 54 now)

4. According to Jill, what is the 6th step of doing a tequila shot?
Answer: The 6th step is optional: If you are Jill, go through a series of funny facial expressions. You have never seen someone enjoy a wedge of lime so much. (And you never will because that video will NOT be posted for all to see--right Vince?)

5. If Jill had a time machine, what era would she go back to in order to find her dream guy?
Answer: The 80s. Like my fictitious idol Carrie Bradshaw, I'm waiting for Mr. Big.

6. When will Jill get married? (if the music is right of course...)
Answer: The answer is "Are You Ready?" because my music shuffle fortune said so. And the answer to that question is, absolutely not.

Jill's Virtual Birthday Party!

Hey there! So glad you could drop by! It's pretty cold out there huh? Come on in and warm up! The bar is over there, gifts go on that table (you didn't have to, really. But if you did bring something, I really hope it is in the form of a song lyric, which you can leave for me in the comments). The band should be arriving around 10:00. Did you see the cake? It's pink! For now, please take part in the party game (below). Thanks again for coming, and please send me any pictures you take!

You Don't Know Jill
Read questions below. All answers have been mentioned in a blog post. E-mail me your answers or post them in the comments (although this will spoil things for everyone else, so you could just wait until I post the answers later).

Happy Jill Day!

Turning 25 turned out to be pretty sweet. I started the day with reading my birthday horoscope (the best one was in the Free Press). When I got to work I received very special cards, each one addressing a different part of my personality. From Amara there was the very fashionable card, from Joanna a card about dreams, and from Abby a card that plays Everybody have Fun Tonight by Wang Chung! I'm not talking just a crappy melody version, but an excerpt of the actual song! All day I went around the office whipping the card out and dancing on the spot.

For lunch Hollene, Tom, Abby and I went to Spicy Noodle House. Soup was good and spicy. I got a fortune cookie AND a calendar (Soup Man doesn't hate me anymore!). Of course we made a Starbucks stop on the way back.

When I returned, my team was hanging out in the hallway. I asked them what was up and they presented me with a Jeannie's cake (legendary in Winnipeg) and a card. I think I actually jumped up and down once or twice. Then my sister phoned to wish me happy birthday and offer to pick me up from work. The day just kept getting better and better.

Next I checked my g-mail and got the news I had been waiting for. I won't say here what it was, but it made me deliriously happy.

And at some point while I was running around celebrating, security phoned to say I had a delivery waiting for me. My mom had sent me flowers.
Tonight I'm going to Casa Grande with my family as per tradition. After dinner some of my extended family and Lisa will join us for cake and presents.
Yay me.
Abby sent me this horoscope:

Greetings Sagittarius, Your horoscope for the 5th of December:

CHARM AND WIT WINS YOU POINTS
Sit down with your best friend and engage in a heart to heart talk today, there’s a lot you can learn from exchanging points of view, or just by talking about the past. You’ve got some ambitious dreams that you’d like to accomplish, so tune into that and allow them to guide you. Your intensity shines out, and because you’ve been working on integrity you’ll be able to get a perfect perspective into what’s going on. Your natural charm kicks in too, thanks to Venus in your sign; people will love to hear your anecdotal stories.

In loving memory of Jill

Peacefully, and with a wink and a smile, Jill died unexpectedly today. She had pretty solid ideas as to how she wanted to live her life and what she wanted out of it. As you read this tribute to her, please reflect on how she carried out her goals.

Impossible. Only in your dreams. These words meant nothing to Jill, who constantly questioned what was supposedly meant to be. She knew what she wanted and she went for it with passion, dedication, and determination. Her infectious attitude always landed her in some kind of personal adventure. She truly felt ever moment of her life, whether happy or sad.

If you could count yourself amongst Jill's carefully selected friends, you must have felt her warm and caring nature. You must have known how much she loved you, as she made sure to tell you so. She did her best to be there for you when you needed someone and she was incredibly grateful for every moment you were there for her. If your time together was short and you fell in and out of touch, she thought of you often and hoped you were doing well, having as much fun as she was.

One of Jill's happiest stories was about meeting the man of her life, Avison Young. She met Avison while on an adventurous canoe trip in South America. She taught him how to paddle, he taught her Patience on the guitar. It could only be love.

A career driven professional, Jill thrived on being challenged and loving what she did. She knew she had found her niche when she was able to make a living out of helping people realize their dreams.

The following is a list of some of her proudest accomplishments: Organizing a 100 participant Random Act of Kindness event, chairing/organizing the Red Shoe Ball in support of "Red Shoe House", running a marathon, playing in a band, writing a song, writing a play and taking figure skating lessons.

In lieu of flowers, feel free to leave her a note in the comment section.
