The Olympic torch arrived in Winnipeg yesterday and I was there. As I stood outside at the Forks along with the thousands of other Winnipeggers who put on their winter gear and came out for the festivities, it felt really cool. I thought about all the times I've watched the Olympics on TV taking place in other countries and realized that even though I'm not in Vancouver, I am still part of the Olympic spirit and celebration. I know people are turned off by the commercialization of the games these days, and no, you couldn't clap your hands without hitting some kind of corporate swag last night. But if you can look past the logos you'll find that marketing can't put a label on spirit. I felt true, Winnipegger, Manitoban, Canadian spirit last night, and that did not come from a free bottle of Coke.
