The first Noel

On Sunday Mom, Dad, Truck and I went out to buy Christmas trees. I'm talking REAL trees with sap and pine scent.

As we pulled up to the lot I could see Santa waving beside a reindeer. The sign said, "Get you picture taken with Blitzen". I had my camera that day, I was excited to stand beside a real reindeer for a picture. But, as we got closer I saw that Blizten wasn't moving at all because although Blitzen was very authentic, he was stuffed like a Christmas turkey. I shuddered. Poor Blitzen!

It was a bit chilly out as Mom and I wandered around the tree lot, -16 with a -30 windchill but we still took our time to pick out the right trees. Here is a picture of me with my first tree!

My dad is funny

Dad e-mailed me on Tuesday morning.

Please contact Daryl to book a date and time to erect your Christmas Tree. This is required to ensure a timely and convenient time to meet your needs and schedule. At this time we have openings at most times this week. Your co-operation in this matter will be greatly appreciated. To ensure a satisfying experience please ensure you have the required materials available:

  1. Tree
  2. Tree Stand
  3. Beer

By having these items at my disposal it will ensure a happy experience that will bring satisfaction to all concerned.

So I requested an appointment for 7:00 pm and Dad showed up.

Once the tree was up we took a last minute trip to Canadian tire for some ornament hangers and an extension cord for the lights. I let the tree thaw overnight and hoped for the best.

The thing about lot trees that you don't really know what the tree is going to open up like. When I was a kid my family used to go to a place where we could chop our own trees down. Kind of like the Griswolds, but legal.

Tonight I came home from work and decorated the tree. I was so excited to try out my garage-sale-special ornaments. I think it turned out pretty. The picture isn't good so you'll have to take my word for it.

Your tree is gorgeous! I am so jealous you got a real one, it must smell so gorgeous in your house. Ours is fake but is lovely... or was, until my bf thought he was helping by polluting it with mini candy canes ALL OVER. It gives me physical pain to look at it, but I'm charmed he showed his first inkling of Christmassy-ness so I can't say anything. ;-)

Thanks Kasia. There are two things I love about living in a house: Real Christmas trees and puppy dogs.

You need to invite a bunch of kids over to your place who will want to eat your candy canes. Le Fiance couldn't say no to a little kid wanting to eat a candy cane from the tree, could he?

So how much is a real tree and is it cheaper than if you were to buy an artificial one that lasts a couple years? Well, I guess at least you don't have the tree taking up storage room for 11 months of the year, so that's a plus for having a real tree, but on the other hand, you can keep a fake tree up for 12 months of the year and be festive all year round!

The tree I bought is a Scotch Pine. It was about $40 and because I bought it from the Transcona Optimists' Club lot, some of the cost will go to Optimist endeavors. (I know, I know, I'm supporting the Ontario border area, but there's a family connection that gets us to drive across the city for a tree that we could have bought for $10 less at a nearby SuperStore.)

I know a fake tree would be cheaper and possibly less hassel, less clean up, less maintenance, but the real tree is a tradition for me that I love.
