Have you hugged an engineer today?

According to Google, the authority on everything (heh), it is Engineering Week. How did I miss that? They even have merchandise--I want the orange slinky.

Today is Introduce a Girl to Engineering day. I'm a girl but I've already been introduced to the iron ring mafia. Chris, Duane, Google boys, Kevin, Nusraat, Rob, Vince, I raise my naked pinky to you in salute. Maybe you think you're geeks, but I think I'm cooler because I know you.

No kidding! I'm surrounded by them every day and I had no idea. I would have thought that one of them would mention something like that. Then again, not all of them are chatty-like.

I think the Iron Ring Mafia is a kind of secret society. They have this whole other language they speak, the subtle ring, they can sign passports for crying out loud! It would be in everyone's best interest to seek out an engineer. They also make for great friends! ;)

I was the only one in my group of interns at Google with an iron ring!

The rest of them were phony engineers! Well, Mark, Michele, Adam, and Heidi are/were in engineering.

Having an iron ring doesn't mean that you can sign passports. You have to join the professional engineering society in order to be able to do that. Jeez... get your facts straight woman!!!

Google people were geeks, ahem, engineers in training. Adam's got his ring now anyway. Should I change the pic to one of just you and him?

Okay fine, SOME engineers can sign passports. I had one sign mine :D

The lineup for engineer hugging forms behind me :P

Ring Mafia, that's pretty funny, I can't believe I've never heard that before. That's what I do for a living.

Vince, are you a P.Eng. or an E.I.T.?

Vince said...

Neither.

I'm laughing.

Anon, why does it not surprise me you're an engineer? That *is* what you mean, right? How is it that I am I surrounded by you people!? Sigh. What do you guys want from me? Why have you chosen to let me peak into your geek world? (Which I love, of course.)

Anonymous, If you have a ring, get in line for a hug.

Never heard of "Iron Ring Mafia" before huh? That's just like an engineer to protect the secret :P It's okay, I won't tell.

No.. Vince is too good to go for his P.Eng. So is Chris... and Nusraat. Apparently I'm the only one actually doing the EIT thing.

Duane Storey said...

Yeah, I didn't do the EIT/Peng thing either.. Just too much money to sign passports..

I missed out on my hugs apparently.. How come I'm always the last to know these things? :P

Today's the last day of E-week so you're still eligible to receive an appreciative hug. I thought Kasia was going to tell you! Oh well, I didn't find out until Thursday.

I wish I could be there to see you go around Vancouver trying to convince people it's Engineers week and as part of the celebration someone needs to give you a hug. Actually, I think I would like to challenge Rob and Vince to that as well :P I'm so going to feel the wrath of the IR mafia...

Ya, not many I know are doing their P.Eng. Florence is...

So for the 9-man volleyball team I just joined, there are at least 5 iron rings on the team! It's like a friggin' engineering convention!
